A New York City Adventure
Ladybug and Cat Noir are invited to travel to New York for French-American Friendship week, and they make the most of it. They join their American counterparts, who are battling an evil villain with the help of an ancient eagle talon necklace that has untold powers. But it’s not all fun and games as Hawk Moth shows competence for a change, and the superheroes’ friendship suffers a setback as well.
The episode opens with Mr. Pigeon trying to take over the Eiffel Tower, and it’s up to our heroes to stop him, who do so by chasing him into space. While there, Alya Cesaire dubbed them Cosmobug and Astrocat, which makes sense since they’re both in their space powers.
While they’re there, Cat Noir gives Ladybug a yellow rose, which in floriography symbolizes friendship. At first, she rejects it, sarcastically asking if yellow roses don’t also represent jealousy. After all, this is just the latest in a series of instances where she’s made it clear that she doesn’t want him around.
During their trip, they meet their American counterparts who seem to know of them and consider them to be “made for each other”. They team up with them in the fight against the Trash Krakken, which happens to be a giant garbage pile with a mouth. They also have to deal with a Generic Doomsday Villain called Techno Pirate, who’s been akumatized and is stealing technology for Hawk Moth.
While it’s nice to see that the superheroes of New York are friendly with their French counterparts, I found this episode very inconsistent with the overall story and tone of the series. The characters’ actions were just a little too reminiscent of the superheroes from other shows that we’re all used to watching, and it made it hard to believe that they were supposed to be in the same universe as the superheroes from Miraculous.
I also didn’t like the fact that they seemed to introduce two new characters that have never been seen before, and then they didn’t really develop them in any way. They’re just kind of thrown into the plot to provide some extra action and give us something to laugh at.
Despite these inconsistencies, the main story is still quite good and the character developments are great. The episode was entertaining and fun, and I recommend it.
Miraculous New York
Miraculous New York is the fifth and final special in the series, and it brings our favorite teenage superheroes to the big apple. This time around, we get to see them work with their American counterparts and stop a Generic Doomsday villain who’s been akumatized and trying to steal an ancient necklace with unknown powers. The main character also goes through a major change that makes it impossible for her to continue being Ladybug without her partner Cat Noir.
