Ladybugs are the ultimate symbol of Springtime and new growth, but they are also a great reminder to stay nimble in the face of life’s changes. This super easy rock painting project only requires four colors and a little bit of time to dry between each layer, but it will be well worth the wait! This ladybug rock will add a fun and bright addition to your garden or walking path.
To make this adorable rock craft, start by washing the rocks to remove any dirt or debris on them. Then, let them dry completely before beginning to paint. The best kind of paint to use for this is craft acrylic – it’ll hold up better than washable kid paint and won’t chip off as easily if it gets wet. This can be purchased at dollar stores or craft stores, and is very affordable for such a large project.
Once the rocks are prepared, begin painting them with the black color. Be sure to cover the entire surface area of the rock. Let the black paint dry completely before moving on. Then, using the round brush, paint a heart shaped head onto each rock and a pair of big white eyes. The bigger the eyes, the more kawaii they will look. Lastly, use the foam craft applicator to create a small dot in the center of each eye for the finishing touch.
Next, take the red paint and cover the rest of the rock. Allow the red to dry fully before adding any details. To make the wings, use the same technique as for the face – just be sure to outline each wing with a thin black line and leave the outer edge white. For the body, use a smaller circle brush to add the smaller red dots. Then, use the same black brush to add a curved line down the back of the body and the rounded spots. Finally, use a small dot of white to finish the eyes.
When finished, allow the rocks to dry again before spraying them with a clear sealant. This will help the painted ladybugs to remain pristine even if they get kicked or rained on! A spray like Krylon Clear Glaze can be found at most craft stores and is very inexpensive.
After spraying the rocks, they can be displayed in a garden, on a walk path or even in a school or public park. These rocks would also make a great gift for someone who loves ladybugs, springtime or gardening! This is the perfect way to show them how much you care.
