Ladybug Videos for Kids
This colorful video of a Lady bug swarm in the mountains above Boulder, Colorado is sure to make your kids smile. It will also introduce them to some interesting facts about Ladybugs (also known as Coccinellidae). These cool insects are actually a type of BEETLE! They’re omnivores and can be found in many different environments, including gardens, meadows, weed patches, and forests. They’re also pretty fascinating – they can “play dead” when threatened! This is accomplished by secreting an oily chemical from their leg joints that smells awful and tastes bad to deter predators.
Another fun fact: Despite their cute appearance, the spots on a Ladybug are actually a warning to predators that they’re poisonous. These insects can even eat 50 aphids a day! They get their name from European farmers who prayed to Mary for help when their crops were being destroyed by aphids, and she sent the Ladybugs to wipe them out. This is why they’re also known as the beetle of Our Lady.

A great way to help kids understand the ladybug lifecycle is by watching this fun ‘All About Ladybugs’ video from PINKFONG.
