Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir is an animated superhero series based on the Miraculous comic books. The series debuted in 2015 on TF1 and TFX’s TFOU block, and it spawned multiple media franchises including toys, comic books, video games, and an original movie.
The show is centered on Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste, two Parisian teenagers who transform into the superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir to fight against supervillains. While the characters have a rocky relationship in their human identities, they become a team of polar opposites when they transform into their heroes.
Marinette is a fashion-obsessed teen who dreams of becoming a designer and has a crush on her classmate, Adrien. But she also has a secret that most other teenage girls don’t: she lives a double life as crime-fighting superhero Ladybug. She’s assisted, reluctantly, by her Cat Noir alter ego, who’s also her crush. Together, they protect their native city of Paris from the villainous Hawk Moth and other supervillains.
Alya Cesaire (voiced by Carrie Keranen in the English dub and Fanny Bloc in the French version) is Marinette’s best friend. She aspires to be a journalist and runs the school’s blog, the Ladyblog. Alya is also a big fan of superheroes, and she operates her own superhero-themed website called the Girlblog. Alya is a close confidant of Marinette and frequently helps her with her problems, which mostly revolve around trying to talk to Adrien.
Marinette’s other close friend is the spoiled and arrogant fashion student Chloe Bourgeois, who often bullies her in order to elevate her status in the eyes of their other classmates. But Chloe isn’t exactly an admirable person, and her behavior winds up causing more trouble than she intends.
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir is an ode to superheroes, and the show’s cast of character actors are as diverse as superheroes themselves. In addition to the main characters, there are recurring supporting characters like Olympia Hill, Ignoblia, Tikki, and Plagg.
Axel Darts (voiced by Matt Mercer in season 1 and Max Mittelman from season 2 onward) is an art student who serves as a mentor to Marinette. Axel is a huge fan of the United Heroez and loves to demonstrate his own powers, which include flight and telekinesis. He is able to teleport objects and people, as well as control the weather and make things grow or shrink.
Hawk Moth (voiced by Keith Silverstein in the English dub and Antoine Tome in the French version) is a wealthy Parisian fashion designer who becomes a major antagonist during the first five seasons of the series. He wants to obtain the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculouses in order to restore his comatose wife Emilie. He was also a former superhero, known as “Swamptitch”, but he lost his powers due to an accident and became a villain when he unified the two Miraculouses into a megakumas that can nullify Ladybug’s magical charms.
During the final episode of the first season, Hawk Moth is finally beaten by Ladybug and Cat Noir. But before he dies, he reveals that his real name is Gabriel Agreste, and that he is Adrien’s strict and emotionally abusive father.
