For the first time, Miraculous Ladybug and Cat Noir will face a new challenge in New York City. New York United Heroez is a 52 minute special about the adventures of the pair in America’s biggest city.

The film follows Marinette’s class trip to New York for French-American Friendship Week. Her father Gabriel Agreste opposes her going because it will also mean he can’t watch over Adrien. Marinette convinces him she can take her classmates to New York if Cat Noir will stay in Paris to keep an eye on things. Cat Noir reluctantly agrees, but he is worried about how well he’ll perform without his partner.

During their trip, the American superheroes meet Marinette and her sidekicks. They’re also introduced to a few new akumatized villains: Lila Rossi, the pathological liar with multiple identities; Chloe Bourgeois, a Ladybug fan who turned against her; and Felix Fathom, an incredibly strong teleporter. The heroes also encounter guitarist Luka Couffaine and fencer Kagami Tsurugi, who develop feelings for Marinette and Adrien. Their relationships are complicated because the two don’t know about each other’s superhero identities.

A few days before leaving, Marinette uses her Peacock Miraculous to repair the fading health of her mother Nathalie. Then, she and her classmates are taken to a museum by the shady escort Mr. Damocles. There, they discover a necklace that holds an eagle talon. If the bird is amokified, it will unlock a secret weapon of Hawk Moth’s. This could bring him back to power and destroy France.

When it comes to the action, the movie hits the ground running. It plunges straight into the fight between the kwami and their enemies, including frequent recurring villain Mr Pigeon. It then moves on to tweenage drama about Marinette’s crush on Adrien, a relationship which is complicated by her obligations as a superhero.

This film is enjoyable for fans of the series, especially if they’re looking forward to seeing it with their family and friends. The animation is high quality, and the characters are engaging and entertaining. The humour is not quite as sophisticated as the original French show, but there are plenty of jokes that should please everyone.

The climax is exciting and a bit unsettling, as the heroes face an akumatized version of themselves. It is a fitting conclusion to this fun film.
