Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir is an extremely popular animated series not only with pre-teens and kids but also with superhero fans and anyone who enjoys female-led animation. It has a full-length movie now on Netflix, multiple comic and book tie-ins, toys and more. The CGI series first debuted in 2015 and has since garnered a massive following both from its original French release and its subsequent English-language releases in the US, UK and elsewhere.
The premise is fairly standard for this genre: a klutzy girl named Marinette finds a magical pair of earrings that give her the power to transform into Ladybug, who can seal “akumas,” or demons that pray upon wounded hearts. She partners with her crush and crime fighting polar opposite, Adrien, who can turn into Cat Noir to fight the baddies. Together they balance their civilian and superhero lives while keeping Hawk Moth at bay.
In addition to their powers, both Marinette and Cat Noir have a Kwami that assists them with their duties. These Kwamis are spirits that partner with the superheroes and have their own special powers. For example, for Ladybug, Tikki is the Kwami of creation; for Cat Noir, Plagg is the Kwami of destruction. Each one of these spirits has a distinct personality and helps the heroes carry out their tasks in the world.
Hawk Moth continues to terrorize Paris with his akumatized victims and it’s up to Ladybug and Cat Noir to fight them all! They must take on Dark Cupid, who breaks hearts on Valentine’s Day, Princess Fragrance, who brainwashes people with her perfumes, Horrificator, a slimy monster that causes fear and more. They even spend a day at the zoo with Marinette’s classmate, Otis, who turns into Animan, a shapeshifting lion, that goes after her crush, Adrien!
As well as their normal villains, the superheroes must also battle Copycat, a Cat Noir lookalike who frames him for theft and Timebreaker, who uses her powers to travel back in time. But the biggest test comes when Pharaoh, a young Egyptologist with the powers of the gods of ancient Egypt, tries to sacrifice Alya in order to bring an ancient Egyptian princess back to life!
It’s a race against the clock as Marinette and Cat Noir try to save Paris from these dangerously powerful creatures. The two must also keep their double identities a secret while balancing their romantic and superhero lives. With all that, will they be able to stop Hawk Moth and keep both of their loves alive?
